Growing Organic Vegetables and Healthy Smiles in Northern Thailand

Dara Boss, School Director for all of the Khun Yuam Primary Schools had a dream to construct a vegetable garden at Mae Surin Noi. The School is nestled in a remote village in the Yuam River Valley with three teachers to serve 32 Karen students. Dara knew that constructing and maintaining a school garden would provide the students with an opportunity to develop their skills in solving challenges step by step. Students would also develop agricultural skills and support the Mae Surin Noi lunch program with nutritious food.

Dara submitted a proposal to Toys for Thailand (T4T) that detailed the timeline and manpower needed to construct the garden. In May of 2019, T4T volunteers, Maria Miller (pictured above, far right) and her nephew Giacamo (pictured below, far left), visited the school. Their assessment confirmed that the project would benefit students and T4T funded the project, with a gift from Elaine and Wayne Armstrong.

The Mae Surin Noi garden project was managed by one of the teachers with an agricultural background. Students assisted in every aspect of building the garden and the irrigation system. In early February 2020, the garden project was completed. Soon students will harvest the non-toxic organic vegetables that they cultivated and enjoy one of their favorite lunch dishes of vegetables with “chili paste”.
